How Georgia Uninsured Motorist Coverage Works

EXAMPLE OF UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE IN GEORGIA

If you are involved in an accident that was the fault of another driver, you are entitled to payment of all expenses and damages resulting from the accident. If the at-fault driver falls within the 10-30% of people without auto insurance, you will be out of luck as far as getting the damages paid. If, however, you have UM coverage on your policy, your damages will be paid from your insurance policy, and not out of your own pocket.

EXAMPLE OF UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE IN GEORGIA

This example also works to show how UM coverage helps in the situation of an accident with an underinsured, at-fault driver. Let’s say you sustained $50,000 in damages as a result of an accident with an at-fault driver who only had $25,000 worth of liability coverage. Luckily, you had UM coverage in the amount of $50,000. The at-fault driver’s insurance company would pay the full amount of his or her coverage, or $25,000. Your insurance company would pay the remaining $25,000 from your UM policy. If there are no other issues, damages can be resolved and paid quickly.

The above examples illustrate why UM insurance coverage is so important. If you or a loved one is the victim of a car or truck accident anywhere in metro-Atlanta, including Smyrna, Stone Mountain, Douglasville, or Suwanee, call our experienced injury attorneys today at (404) 888-0500.
